Poem by Taylor Mali

"Totally Like Whatever"

In case you hadn’t noticed,
it has somehow become uncool
to sound like you know what you’re talking about?
Or believe strongly in what you’re saying?
Invisible question marks and parenthetical (you know?)’s
have been attaching themselves to the ends of our sentences?
Even when those sentences aren’t, like, questions? You know?
Declarative sentences – so-called
because they used to, like, DECLARE things to be true
as opposed to other things which were, like, not -
have been infected by a totally hip
and tragically cool interrogative tone? You know?
Like, don’t think I’m uncool just because I’ve noticed this;
this is just like the word on the street, you know?
It’s like what I’ve heard?
I have nothing personally invested in my own opinions, okay?
I’m just inviting you to join me in my uncertainty?
What has happened to our conviction?
Where are the limbs out on which we once walked?
Have they been, like, chopped down
with the rest of the rain forest?
Or do we have, like, nothing to say?
Has society become so, like, totally . . .
I mean absolutely . . . You know?
That we’ve just gotten to the point where it’s just, like . . .
whatever!
And so actually our disarticulation . . . ness
is just a clever sort of . . . thing
to disguise the fact that we’ve become
the most aggressively inarticulate generation
to come along since . . .
you know, a long, long time ago!
I entreat you, I implore you, I exhort you,
I challenge you: To speak with conviction.
To say what you believe in a manner that bespeaks
the determination with which you believe it.
Because contrary to the wisdom of the bumper sticker,
it is not enough these days to simply QUESTION AUTHORITY.
You have to speak with it, too.

Silent Night

This famous song is mostly song around Christmas time and has been for well over a century.  The impact this song has had on people's lives is immeasurable and shows just how great God truly is.  History into this song will show that it was originally wrote because the church organ had become broken.  The organ was the key accompaniment to many songs so Silent Night was composed with a guitar as the only accompaning instrument.  Had the organ not broke then the song never would have existed!
I bet there was a lot of stress and worrying going on at the church when the organ broke but, unbeknownst to the pastor and congregation, the organ breaking was all apart of God's grander scheme.  This plan that he thought out would travel so far to where both you and I have song along to this very song, or at the very least heard of it.  This shows us that even the tripups, the headaches, and the speed bumps and life are not just random annoyances thrown into your day.  Instead, these are ways that God is trying to get our attention so that He may do great works through us.

Santa needs to get new helpers

As everyone is well aware Christmas is swiftly approaching. I love Christmas. I love going out and buying people stuff that they probably won't use because I'm terrible at buying gifts. I love the lights, the snow, the tree, and the family get togethers. I also enjoy seeing Santa at the mall. This year I decided to be brave, or stupid, and go get my picture taken with Santa. His "Helpers" kindly informed me that I was too big. I know I am 21 and all but I am a fairly scrawny individual who had great plans for this picture. My love for Christmas died a little on that day but fear not because I will acquire this picture even if it means going out and buying a Santa costume for one of my more rotund friends to wear. VIVA LA CHRISTMAS!

Blank

I was going to type the most amazing blog post you were ever going to read. Then I saw my cat do a backflip and my mind was so flabbergasted by the event that my mind went blank. Hence the title "Blank." I shall end with wise words that made me smile this morning. "Good morning"
